A growing passion

Hilke's passion for basketball began at a very young age. She started when she was five years old. A friend's invitation to a club practice ignited her love for the sport. “I liked it so much that I just stuck with it ever since,” Hilke says. “Basketball quickly became more than just a hobby for me. Everything within the sport makes me exciting; from the atmosphere to team play,” she explains. “I love being around my teammates, winning with them, sometimes losing with them. It's about going after the same goal with each other and having the support there. Also, being able to express yourself and use some creativity. Although that isn’t always easy, it is always challenging, and that makes it my biggest passion as well.”

Hilke found inspiration in one of Germany's top basketball talents, Satou Sabally. Last summer she was able to play for the national team of Germany at the Olympics. “I've looked up to Satou Sabally when I was younger. She's from my hometown, and we went to the same club for a while. She was always a role model for me, and she's doing great now with Germany.”

Early years in Berlin

Her early years in Berlin were crucial in shaping her skills. Hilke started playing at VfL Lichtenrade when she was five years old. “I was playing with boys in the beginning, because we didn't have a girls' team. It was more competitive, and I just really enjoyed it.” Eventually, she moved to TuS Lichterfelde, where she played with girls. That was something new, but I definitely loved it.”

Transition to professionalism

Hilke's commitment to basketball deepened when she joined Alba Berlin, one of Germany's biggest clubs. “It made everything more professional. I was playing in the second Bundesliga and practiced way more often. We had time in the mornings and evenings to practice, which helped me develop my game. Playing in the highest league made everything possible; playing more dynamic and able to play more physical. Alba Berlin was a great organization! We didn't get to play much in the season because of covid-19, but practicing against real pros helped me become stronger and more physical. Playing first division in Germany prepared me for college basketball in the U.S..”

Going to the United States

At the University of Missouri, Hilke continues to grow. She has been there for a year now, played her freshman year last season. “It's a great atmosphere with great coaching staff,” Hilke says. “Playing in one of the best leagues has been incredible. Competing against players like Angel Reese and Hailey Van Lith has helped me improve my game.” This season, Hilke will play her sophomore year. With a high potential, we know that she will do great again.

National representation

Representing Germany in various age groups has been a highlight for Hilke. “Playing for the under 16 team at the European Championship was an amazing experience. I didn't expect to make the team, but I did, and it kicked off a series of summers with the national team. It is amazing to wear Germany on your chest and play for your country!”

Hilke’s dreams extend beyond college basketball. “I hope to play for the women's national team of Germany and professionally in Europe once I finish my college degree. I just love the game and want to play professionally.”

Hilke’s journey is a proof of her dedication, talent, and love for basketball. As she continues to develop her skills and chase her dreams, there's no doubt she will achieve great success on both the collegiate and international stages. Photo: FIBA Europe
