A love for basketball discovered by chance

Edessa’s journey into the world of basketball began with a stroke of luck during a physical education lesson at school. It was here that her first coach introduced her to the sport, igniting a passion that would grow stronger with every passing day. “My first coach, she came to a PE lesson in school. So, I just tried it, and it was fun, so I just started playing,” Edessa reminisces. What started as a casual introduction quickly blossomed into a full-fledged passion. “I love this sport from the minute I started playing,” she says, her voice filled with the enthusiasm of that young girl who first picked up a basketball. From that moment, there was no looking back; basketball had become an integral part of her life.

Early years of dedication and growth

Edessa’s natural talent did not go unnoticed. By the time she was 13 or 14, she had already made her mark on the Swedish basketball scene, earning a coveted spot on the national team. The selection was a significant milestone for the young athlete, who began to realize her potential and set higher goals for herself. “When I was in the national team, and I was, like, I think 13 or something, that’s when I, like, started to actually, like, set up goals and, like, try to do something with basketball,” Edessa reflects. This early exposure to high-level competition fueled her ambition and sharpened her focus, driving her to constantly improve and push her limits.

Thriving in Sweden’s highest basketball league

Before taking her talents to the United States, Edessa honed her skills in Sweden’s highest basketball league, playing for the prestigious Huddinge Basket and Södertälje club. The experience was both challenging and rewarding, as she was thrust into a level of competition that required her to adapt quickly. “It was different. Like, it was much higher level than what I was used to at the beginning. But I got used to it, and it was, like, I thought it was fun to play against people that were older,” Edessa explains. This period of her career was instrumental in her development, teaching her valuable lessons in resilience and adaptability. “Sometimes better than me, and then, so I could get better than them,” she says, highlighting her relentless drive to improve. The challenges of American college basketball

The decision to move to the United States and join the Virginia Cavaliers was a bold step for Edessa, one that came with its own set of challenges. The American college basketball system, with its rigorous schedule and intense competition, was a significant adjustment. “It was quite different. Like, they have so many rules of playing. And about how you are, like, what times you are allowed to practice and stuff like that,” Edessa notes. The transition was not just about adapting to a new style of play; it also meant adjusting to life far from home. “Moving away from home was different. Because I am very much of, like, a family person,” she shares. Yet, true to her resilient nature, Edessa embraced these challenges, using them as opportunities for growth. “I feel like I grew as a person and a basketball player,” she says, reflecting on her first year in the U.S..

Learning from every experience

One of the defining traits of Edessa’s approach to basketball is her constant desire to learn and grow. She draws inspiration from a wide array of players, constantly seeking to incorporate new elements into her game. “I just, like, look at everyone and, like, if I see something I like in one player, I just try to adapt that in my game,” she explains. This open-mindedness and willingness to learn have allowed her to evolve into a versatile and formidable player on the court. Her rebounding skills have seen significant improvement, a development she attributes to her unique style of play. “I play more aggressive and, like, hard. I think it is just, like, how I grew up. Like, we weren’t given anything, so we had to take it,” Edessa explains. This toughness, combined with the technical guidance she received from her Lithuanian coach, has shaped her into a player who is both physically and mentally strong.

Embracing a leadership role

As Edessa prepares for her second year with the Virginia Cavaliers, she is stepping into a new role as a leader on the team. The experience she gained during her first year in the U.S. has given her the confidence to speak up and take charge. “I have some experience in, like, the States. I feel like it is much easier. I know how everything works. And I feel like I have a voice in the team now,” she says. This newfound confidence is not just about leading on the court; it is also about enjoying the game and trusting in her abilities. “I feel like when I don’t think about it too much, I play better,” she adds, a simple yet profound insight into her approach to the game.

Looking ahead: dreams and aspirations

With her sights set on future goals, Edessa makes an even bigger impact in the world of basketball. Her experiences in Sweden’s top league, on the national team, and now in the highly competitive environment of American college basketball have equipped her with a unique skill set and a deep understanding of the game. She is not just a player with potential; she is a player who is actively realizing that potential, one game at a time. “I like to just, like, the way we play. I don’t know how to explain,” she says, capturing the essence of her passion for the sport. It is this passion, combined with her relentless work ethic and strategic mindset, which will undoubtedly propel her to new heights in her basketball career.
