A family tradition of playing basketball

For Luisa, basketball isn’t just a sport; it’s a family legacy. Growing up in a household where basketball was woven into the fabric of everyday life, it was almost inevitable that she would find her way to the court. Her mother was a talented player in Germany’s second division, and her father, a respected first-division referee, was a constant presence in the country’s basketball circles. “My dad was a referee in the first division, and my younger brother plays for Alba Berlin,” Luisa explains. “But it was my older brother who really got me into basketball. He’s the one who made me fall in love with the game, even though he now plays just for fun.”

Luisa’s introduction to sports, however, began with handball. It wasn’t until later that she discovered her true passion. “I started with handball because all my friends were playing it,” she recalls with a laugh. “But once I tried basketball, there was no going back. The game just clicked with me. It felt like I had found something I had been searching for all along.”

Finding her strength from her heart in Freiburg

Luisa’s basketball journey took a significant turn when she joined USC Freiburg. It was here that she truly began to flourish, surrounded by teammates who would become like family and coaches who believed in her potential. “When I came to Freiburg, everything changed,” she says, her voice filled with warmth and gratitude. “It was like finding my second home. The first year was already a highlight because we moved up to the first division. That was when I realized that this is where I belong, on the court and with this team.”

The bond Luisa has with Freiburg is deep and genuine. It’s a place where she has grown, not just as a player but as a person. “Freiburg is special. It’s more than just a club, it’s a community. We have both first and second division teams, which creates a perfect environment for developing young talent. It’s a place where you can learn, grow, and become the best version of yourself,” she explains. “The support we get from the fans, the camaraderie among the players, it’s all so special. This is where I found my confidence, my voice, and my strength.”

Overcoming life’s toughest moments

But Luisa’s path hasn’t been without its challenges. In 2019, she suffered a catastrophic injury that could have ended her career; a moment that tested her resolve like never before. “I broke my arm in multiple places. The doctors told me I might never play basketball again,” she recalls, the emotion still raw in her voice. “It was one of the darkest moments of my life. But I refused to let that be the end of my story. Basketball is my life, and I wasn’t going to let anything take that away from me.”

Through sheer determination and an unbreakable spirit, Luisa embarked on a grueling journey of rehabilitation. It was a battle fought not just physically but mentally, as she had to overcome the fear of re-injury and rebuild her confidence from the ground up. “There were days when it felt impossible, when the pain was overwhelming, and the doubt crept in. But I kept pushing forward, one step at a time, one day at a time,” she says, reflecting on the months of hard work that eventually brought her back to the court.

Winning the championship

And return she did; stronger, wiser, and more determined than ever! In 2022, Luisa’s perseverance was rewarded when she helped lead Freiburg to a historic German championship. “That championship, that was like living a dream! We won by 30 points in the final, and it was one of the most emotional moments of my life,” she says, her eyes shining with pride. “To be able to share that victory with my team, in front of our home crowd, with all my friends and family there it was indescribable. It was the culmination of everything I had worked for, everything I had fought for.”

The essence of teamwork: Luisa’s love for the game

What makes Luisa truly special isn’t just only her skill on the court, but her deep love for the game and her team mates she plays with. For her, basketball is about more than just winning, it’s about the connections, the camaraderie, and the shared experience of striving for greatness together. “I love competing, but what I love even more is the bond I share with my team,” she says passionately. “Basketball is a team sport in the truest sense. You can have the best players, but without a strong team, you have nothing.”

Luisa’s admiration for her teammates is evident, as is her respect for the players who have inspired her along the way. She speaks with particular fondness of Svenja Brunckhorst, the German gold medalist in 3x3 basketball. “Svenja is everything I aspire to be,” Luisa says, her voice filled with admiration. “She’s such a great person, and her energy on the court is incredible. She’s always looking out for her teammates, making sure everyone is playing their best. I want to be that kind of player, the one who lifts others up, who makes everyone around her better.”

But it’s not just her teammates who benefit from Luisa’s generosity of spirit. Her advice to younger players is filled with the wisdom of someone who has faced adversity and come out the other side stronger. “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes,” she urges. “When I started, I was so scared of doing something wrong. But mistakes are part of the game. What matters is that you leave everything on the court; your heart, your soul and your passion. Play with confidence, support your teammates, and never, ever stop hustling.”

A proud journey with Germany's national team

Luisa Nufer's basketball career is deeply intertwined with her experiences representing Germany on the international stage. Her journey began in 2018 when she played for the under 16 national team at the European Championships. “Stepping onto the court for Germany for the first time was surreal,” she recalls. “Wearing the national jersey and standing for the anthem gave me goosebumps. It’s a feeling like no other.” Luisa’s dedication saw her progress to the under 20 national team, where she competed in the 2021 and 2022 European Championships. “Playing at this level was a huge step up,” she says. “The competition was tougher, but the pride of representing Germany only grew stronger.”

For Luisa, the honor of playing for her country is one of the most treasured aspects of her career. “Every time I hear the national anthem and see our flag, I’m reminded of why I love this game,” she shares.
