Sport within the family
Anna Laura's love for basketball was almost predestined. Coming from a family where sports were more than just a pastime, the transition into a life of athletic dedication was seamless. “I come from a sporty family, so it wasn't a question to do some sports,” she shares. With a mother who played basketball, a father who was a track and field athlete, and a grandfather who coached basketball, Anna Laura's early environment was rich with inspiration. “I started to play basketball around when I was like six or seven years old,” she recalls, marking the beginning of what would become a lifelong pursuit.
Inspired by greatness
While her family's influence laid the foundation, it was her encounters with other athletes that truly ignited her aspirations. Anna Laura speaks with admiration about those who have shaped her journey, both on and off the court. “For sure, I need to mention my parents and my brother because they really helped me achieve my dreams,” she says. But her inspirations extend beyond her family. Playing alongside stars like Jelena Brooks at Sopron Basket was a turning point for Anna Laura. “She really helped me a lot and she's an amazing player,” Anna Laura reflects. The experience of practicing and playing with such high-caliber athletes provided her with invaluable lessons. “She won EuroLeague and went to the Olympics a few times and won the bronze medal in 2016. So, she is my significant role model,” she adds, emphasizing the impact of these experiences on her development. Then there's LeBron James, whose career longevity and excellence have also left a mark on her. “The level he can maintain at 39 years of age, it's amazing,” she says, highlighting the relentless work ethic that she admires and strives to emulate.
A journey through Hungary’s basketball scene
Anna Laura's basketball journey has taken her across borders, most notably to Hungary, where she honed her skills in one of Europe's most competitive leagues. Reflecting on her time with Sopron Basket and now Győr, she notes the significant step up in intensity and physicality compared to Slovakia. “I think it is on a higher level, but the Slovakian league is also improving, which I am happy about. So, I am really glad that I decided to play in Hungary to improve and make the best version of myself.”
Her transition from Slovakia to Hungary was marked by nerves and uncertainty, but it proved to be the right decision. “It was a really great decision,” she states. Anna Laura thrived in the competitive environment, even as she balanced her academic pursuits with her athletic career. “For me, it is important also to manage school and basketball. I want to receive a degree for sure.”
The thrill of the first minutes on the highest league of Hungary
The memory of her first minutes in Hungary's highest basketball league is still fresh in Anna Laura's mind. “I got exactly, and I will always remember that 29 seconds,” she recalls with a smile. Those seconds, though brief, were charged with significance. “I was so grateful for that, no matter how many playing minutes I would get, I would do my best,” she says. And she did. In those fleeting moments, she managed to score, proving that she could compete at the highest level.
looking to the future
Her experience playing for the national youth team in Slovakia further fueled her drive. Representing her country, especially at such an early age, was both an honor and a challenge. “I was really thankful to the coach,” she says, noting how she was selected despite being two years younger than her teammates. “It was really something special to represent my country for the very first time.”
As Anna Laura prepares for the next chapter of her journey, which includes playing basketball in the United States at the James Madison University in Virginia, she remains grounded and focused on her goals. “A childhood dream coming true,” she calls it, but she knows the road ahead will be demanding. “I know I have a lot of things to build on,” she acknowledges, listing aggressivity, shooting, and court vision among the areas she wants to develop.
What is next, what is her ultimate dream? To become a EuroLeague player and to have a significant impact. “I'm really excited,” she says of the opportunity ahead, eager to see how much further she can push herself.
Anna Laura Molnárová's story is one of quiet determination and relentless effort. It is a story of a young woman who understands that while talent may open the door, it is hard work and perseverance that will keep it open.
